Learn about Trail to GO -- GO Transit to access the Waterfront Trail

Stretching over 2100 km along the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, Lake Huron and the Niagara, Detroit and St. Lawrence Rivers, the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail connects 114 communities and hundreds of parks and natural areas including wetlands, forests and beaches. Created to protect, connect and celebrate the world's largest group of freshwater lakes, the Trail is the first step in a broader strategy to regenerate our Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. Today the Trail is a well-loved and used recreation, fitness and green transportation amenity and a world-renowned tourism attraction.

Enjoy the Trail for a quick stroll or as part of a multi-day, long distance adventure:

The fully signed Trail is a combination of paths (21%), neighbourhood streets (21%), and rural roads (58%). Many urban centres have dedicated paths that are a key feature of their waterfronts. Major trails including the Niagara River Path and the St. Lawrence bikeway are part of the Waterfront Trail network. It is largely paved and welcomes all types of non-motorized recreation including runners, cyclists, walkers, wheelchairs, strollers and rollerbladers. Many sections of the Trail are also designated as part of the The Great Trail by Trans Canada Trail.

Established in 1988, the Waterfront Regeneration Trust is the non-profit organization leading the movement to create a Waterfront Trail for the Canadian Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. We do this in partnership with 114+ community partners, supporting corporations, foundations and partner organizations. Check out our progress. You can help by participating in the Annual Great Waterfront Trail Adventure and/or donating to the Trust

Happy Trails!
