Profiles:
Route
A perennial favourite of end to enders, Port Hope is a charming
heritage town with an excellent selection of B&Bs, shopping,
theatre and restaurants. The Trail itself features the dedicated
handiwork of volunteers that made this Trail possible including
benches, bird feeders, gazebo and tributes to the community leaders
who played key role in the Trail's development-The Keith Richan
Walkway and the A.K. Sculthorpe Memorial Woodland Marsh. It is also
the start of the Apple Route, a scenic driving tour that will take
you past some of Northumberland's best sites. Trail can be divided
into two sections: |
|
 |
Keith Richan Walkway |
| |
 |
| |
Western Section (from the Clarington boundary and ending near the western
edge of the urban part of Port Hope):
- Lakeshore Rd is asphalt with no shoulders. The speed limit along the
road is 60 kph.
- Terrain is hilly and area does not offer any amenity stops -- it is
a beautiful rural ride (or walk) and offers many clear vistas of Lake
Ontario.
Eastern Section (western edge of the urban part of Port Hope through
the downtown to the east and continues on through Hamilton Township over
to Cobourg):
- Combination of asphalt (on-road) and packed earth (off-road); portions
along the waterfront are packed limestone. The off-road sections follow
closely to the waterfront and end at Gage's Creek. To continue east
users must continue on the on-road portions of the Trail.
- Highway 2 to Cobourg has paved shoulders (designated for riders and
walkers).
Main Access Points (with parking):
- Downtown parking allows for southerly access to the Waterfront Trail
with municipal parking areas.
- Lake Street parking lot
- King St. Parking Lot (near the Marina).
