FEATURED ROUTE – Scarborough

The Waterfront Trail is 650km from Niagara to Quebec, but there is a gap in Scarborough that the Waterfront Regeneration Trust is working to close and get signed. As part of the first annual Waterfront Trail and Greenway Day on Sept. 20th, we will be riding 56km from Mississauga to Pickering, including the proposed route through Scarborough.
There are a few spots available for this ride if you would like to join us or volunteer along the route; for more information log on to www.waterfronttrail.org or contact Petrina at pt@wrtrust.com or 416-943-8080.

If you would like to ride the route on your own you can check out the maps at:
http://www.waterfronttrail.org/maps/wt-zone2.pdf

We would love to hear your comments about what you think of the interim route as we will be meeting with the city in a few weeks and your opinion matters!

FEATURED ATTRACTION – Lakefront Promenade Marina

A favourite stop for several Waterfront Trail users is the Lakefront Promenade Public Marina. Located on one of the largest park developments on Lake Ontario, the marina offers a licensed patio from which to enjoy the comings and goings of the boats while stopping for a rest and a snack. There are also picnic spots and a pond to play with your battery operated remote control boat. For more information log on to:

VOLKSPORT

Have you heard of Volksport? According to the Canadian Volksport Association “A Volkssport Event is an organized non-competitive walk, bike ride, swim, or cross-country ski through a scenic area over a pre-determined route designed for people of all ages.”

There are several events that take place throughout the province, check out the links below for more information.

TRAIL TALE by Neil MacFayden

Neil MacFayden rode 275km from Stevensville (Fort Erie) to Port Hope on Aug. 10th, and although he didn’t make it to Belleville as anticipated, he completed a large chunk of the Waterfront Trail in 13 hours.
“ I really enjoyed the pathways, it helps to relax while on them and not worry about the traffic behind you. The first trail I hit was in Hamilton, great trail in that it also helps the community reclaim the beach front. Nice ride under the Burlington Skyway and then through Burlington. I picked it up again for a short ride in Mississauga, then not again until Toronto. Going through Toronto with the path really helps. After the docks in Toronto back on the path through the Beaches very nice. Then caught Lawrence and the bridge over the Rouge.”
MacFayden’s wife met him in Port Hope where they stayed the night and recovered at Sandbanks Provincial Park the next day. The enjoyed Sandbanks so much that they returned to camp the following week-end.

UPCOMING EVENTS

There’s still a lot happening on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River waterfronts this fall. Terry Fox runs will be happening on the 16th, art exhibits and music festivals are taking place, and harvest and chili events will help you stay warm as our days get colder. WARNING: The information and suggestions in this newsletter have been developed to assist Trail users in planning both their recreational and commuting trips along the Waterfront Trail. It mentions signed routes of the Trail, as well as possible routes and connections in areas where routes have not yet been designated as part of the Waterfront Trail. The possible routes and connections have been identified in consultation with the municipalities and Conservation Authorities of Lake Ontario and from Trail users. Some of these possible routes and connections may not be ideal for cycling, in-line skating, or hiking. They may be unsuitable for some Trail users because of the close proximity to vehicular traffic or unsuitable trail surface. Whenever possible, indicators have been placed on the maps to warn of caution areas. However, be prepared to make your own evaluation of traffic, trail and road conditions, and plan routes appropriate to your riding, in line skating, and hiking skills and your comfort level. This newsletter is not intended as a guide for children.
