Trailblazers!

What you should know about the impact and income of trails in our communities.

Date: Friday November 5, 2004
Time: 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Location: the Atlantis Pavilions, Ontario Place, Toronto
LUNCH AND REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED

The economic impact of trails: For the first time, Earl Williams, Pricewaterhouse Coopers presents summary findings of the Trans Canada Trail Economic Impact Study. One of the reasons behind this study of the impact of building a Canada-wide recreational trail was to help Ontario communities raise support for local trails.
Trails have tremendous economic benefits:

  • A total of $1.97 billion in value added (income) in the province will be sustained each year in total by all Trail users’ non-durable good expenditures
  • Local Ontario governments in the study region are expected to receive annual flows of $129.4 million in the form of fees, business taxes and capitalised property taxes on expenditure impacts.
  • The local governments in the study region are expected to collect over $0.3 million per year as a result of ongoing trail maintenance.

The business of attracting trail tourism: Share the insights that come from a panel discussion with two experts in the tourism industry. Ian Lobb, Steve Bauer Bike Tours, www.stevebauer.com offers biking experiences throughout the world to bikers of every age, ability, and agility. Mike Lalonde, Cornwall and Seaway Valley Tourism, www.visit.cornwall.on.ca discusses what happens when a local trail system becomes part of the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail. Learn from his firsthand experience of the economic and tourism benefits!

Easier vacation-planning with the improved Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail: The new site includes:

  • An up-to-date guide to 740 kms of trail along Lake Ontario, including the new eastern extension
  • New, online colour Trail maps that can be downloaded and printed for free
  • Updated information on what to see and where to stay along the Trail
  • Let experts show you how to ensure the success of trails in your community.
