A Call for Action

The Government of Ontario has just received a report 'Protecting Ontario's Drinking Water: Toward a Watershed Based Source Protection Planning Framework'. This report was prepared by an expert Advisory Panel and is in response to one of the most important recommendations made by Justice O'Connor in theWalkerton Report.

I have been involved in commenting on the development of this Report through my role as a volunteer Board member with the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA). In addition, last week CELA co-sponsored a workshop with the Ontario Environment Network to review the report and discuss a course of action. It was the consensus of the workshop participants that the Source Water Protection Document should be supported. We all agreed that grassroots is important. On that basis we drafted some points that might be included in an individual's letter of support - these points are noted in the attachment to this ezine. Click here to view the letter.

Although the proposed Framework is intended to deal only with the protection of drinking water sources, it will indirectly go a long way in the protection of watershed ecosystems, which in turn will greatly aid in the regeneration of Lake Ontario- OUR COMMON GOAL.

If you agree, we would appreciate your support by sending a letter to the address indicated on the attachment. Please note that the deadline for public comment is June 21st. To read the full report, titled “Protecting Ontario’s Drinking Water: Toward a Watershed Based Source Protection Planning Framework”, it is available on the Ministry of Environment’s web site at http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/envision/water/spp.htm.

A Waterfront Trail Tale From Our Newest End-to-Enders

Each year we receive several letters from Trail enthusiasts describing their travels on the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Quinte West. Recently we have received some interesting letters from groups and individuals who have either cycled or walked the Trail in one trip or over a series of small excursions. This summer we have decided to share some of these stories with you. This month’s tale is from Margaret Robbins who wrote to us on behalf of her group The Crazy Eights. Here is an excerpt from her letter:

“Each year since 1995, we plan four consecutive hiking days in the spring, when we sally forth with daypacks, sturdy boots, sun hats, etc., and no cars we are on our own! We do book overnight accommodation, and use trains and buses ‘to get there’. Needless to say, the sight of eight (more or less) very elderly ladies in hiking garb, and obviously in a very exalted frame of mind, attracts a bit of attention, and some very interesting things have happened to us! -there was the time when on the upper deck of the GO Train, an older gentleman from China wanted his picture taken with us on his camera, so we obligingly got somebody to do this while we surrounded him everybody smiling. The reason he wanted this? to send home, to show what a good time he was having in Canada!”
