TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF THE DON VALLEY TRAIL
A notice has recently been released by the City of Toronto regarding
a
temporary closure of the Don Valley Trail between Queen St. and Lake Shore
Blvd. The closure is due to construction on the Kingston CN Rail Bridge,
which is being implemented as part of a flood protection program in the
area
west of the Lower Don River.
While the Waterfront Trail will remain unaffected by this construction,
the
closed section of the Don Valley Trail is located near the connection
with
the Waterfront Trail at Cherry St. Waterfront Trail users connecting on
to
the Don Valley Trail will find themselves redirected along an alternate
route that rejoins with the Don Trail at Queen St. The designation of
the
alternate route as well as the installation of signage were done by the
city, working with the Pedestrian Cycling Infrastructure, Parks Operations,
TRCA and the Toronto Cycling Committee. This section of the Don Valley
Trail, is scheduled to reopen when construction finishes in the spring
of
2007.
For more information on the project, visit the TRCA website at:
www.trca.on.ca/water_protection/lower_don_ea.
THE GREAT GTA CIRCLE HIKE
Join Todd Bardes and Harold Sellers on a 550km trek along the Waterfront
Trail, Bruce Trail and Oak Ridges Morraine Trail and Trans Canada Trail.
31 easy day hikes will circumnavigate Toronto circling the Greater Toronto
Area. Each hike is between 10-15 km and is designed for new and beginning
hikers/walkers to learn more about hiking, clothing, equipment and food
while hiking. This series of hikes offers an excellent opportunity to
discover and experience various trails around Toronto, which pass through
both urban and rural settings. The first 6 hikes will take place on March
18
& 19, April 15 &16 and May 13 & 14.
Since space on the trek is limited, pre-registration is required.
Reservations can be emailed to tb_hiker@hotmail.com.
The full hiking details
and starting point will be e-mailed to all those registered hikers/walkers.
Membership in the Bruce Trail Association or Oak Ridges Trail Association
or
a $10 donation to Hike Ontario is required. Thanks to Todd Bardes for
kindly
providing us with this announcement.
Cheers!
